My academic background is in sociology from the University of New South Wales. I worked at the university for two years after graduating, researching and co-authoring a book on community health, so I am much versed in the trials and tribulations experienced by authors.
After graduating I spent eighteen months abroad. When I returned to Australia I gained a graduate diploma in librarianship and a technical certificate in records management. My interest in library work waned after two years and I returned to social research, heading up north to Port Douglas (Qld) to assist on a project examining employment and education opportunities for women.
It was 1985, pre-Mirage days. I spent my time off looking for orchids and blazing new tracks with my co-researcher Sue Goadby who also operated a walking tour company.
On my return to Sydney I joined a consulting firm, undertaking a range of projects in information management and social research. In 1986 I was appointment project manager for a post natal depression education program funded by St Margaret's Private Hospital.
The project team produced a video kit which aimed primarily to educate health professionals and to promote community awareness of the problem. The video kit won three major awards and was successfully sold throughout Australia and abroad. It was a great project to work on, as it gave me the opportunity to contribute to a much neglected area of women's experience.
I returned to study in 1992 to qualify in Horticulture. To earn income as I studied I started book indexing which I was familar with from my days working as a librarian. The indexing soon took off and I have since that time kept landscaping and indexing which brings a great balance to my working life. I have taught indexing at Macleay College and conducted workshops for the NSW Society of Editors.
I am a Registered indexer and formly the President of the NSW Branch of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Indexers. I believe professional bodies such as ANZSI are very important for maintaining professional standards, fostering professional development and encouraging research and development in the field.
In 2000 I established Landscape Botanica a landscape design business which has undertaken projects in Sydney, Brisbane and the Blue Mountains. Our specialities are Australian native gardens and small gardens, albeit we will undertake projects using a wide variety of plant species on any scale. Please visit Landscape Botanica's website for details.
I am also currently involved in a web site project which combines both
indexing and horticulture www.winediva.com.au
And life's pleasures .... planting out a garden on a warm autumn day,
now that's bliss!!!
