Indexat is a trading name of Caroline Colton and Associates Pty Ltd (CCA) which was established in 1988 by the present director, Caroline Colton.
CCA has successfully completed projects in the areas of web design, information architecture, project management, indexing, classification, library and information management, research and training.
Using a flexible approach to service provision we have met the needs of government organisations and private industry.
In 2000 indexat was established with the express aim of focusing on information architecture to fulfill the increasing demands for expertise in developing intranets and web sites. Information architecture draws together indexing, classification, thesaurus, database and web design skills which are utilised in site re-design and bottom-up development projects.
Indexat has undertaken work for private clients as well as producing
online directory products. Our product for the Australian wine industry, Wine
Diva is the first directory to integrate all sectors of the wine
industry into the one Internet directory.
In recent years indexat has focused on providing a range of support services to online and print publishers.

Indexing
Our professional indexers can enhance books, journals, reports, guidelines, policy documents, loose-leaf services, electronic multimedia products, databases, web sites or intranet sites by creating an index for readers or users.
We offer over 20 years of experience in indexing a wide range of information formats for government and private clients. Our subject range includes law and medicine, science and technology, business and management, social sciences, biography and the arts. Our subject specialities include: law, medicine and health, agriculture, horticulture, environment, history, art and architecture, literary theory and business and economics.
Indexing rate: $60 per hour (excl GST)
Legal indexing
Indexat provides specialist services to legal publishers and organisations producing legal and taxation publications and web sites. Services include indexing books, monographs, journals and looseleaf publications, tables and cases; developing and maintaining legal web sites; providing indexing training courses for legal editors. Our team has many years of combined experience in the field. We provide a very accurate, competitive service by optimising macro programming and adopting formats and processes which are compatible with our client's systems.
Indexing rate: $60 per hour (excl GST)
Writing, Editing, Plain English Consulting
Writing, editing and Plain English consulting services are available
through Indexat. Whether you require writing or editing, indexing or
proofreading services, Indexat is able to provide a comprehensive service
that includes all these aspects of publishing, with the benefit of continuity
of service provision and high quality throughout the production process.
Our writer/editor, Janice McLeod, has a background in vocational education and training
with a Masters degree in Education and has worked as a plain English
consultant for the last thirteen years. She prepares and presents customised
writing skills courses and programs for a range of staff from public
and private sector organisations. She has researched, written and edited
business and educational documents including major reports, training
kits and policy manuals.
Her services include planning and implementing plain English policies,
preparing in-house style guides, editing the content of websites, and
helping clients to communicate new policies, technical information and
legislative requirements to both internal and external stakeholders.

Copy editing
Indexat provides a professional editing service as well as indexing, proofreading, classification and thesaurus development for all print and electronic mediums. Our company provides specialty services to legal publishers and organisations producing taxation and legal manuscripts for publication and web sites. Proofreading
Our skilled proofreaders have many years' experience at this specialist work. Attention to detail developed in that exacting environment makes our proofreaders top in their field.
Proofreading is a quality control process to ensure that your published materials are free of typographical errors and conform to the required standard of presentation. An extensive and current knowledge of new words, technical terms and publication styles is an essential element in achieving a professional product. This work should ideally be done by someone independent of the project, who can offer a fresh eye just before your document is sent to press.

Classification
Our firm has undertaken classification work in areas ranging from generic product and services classification through to industry specific and organisation specific classification. Classification is an essential component of databases, intranets and web sites forming the basis upon which users are able to search and browse information.

Metadata
Metadata is constructed by our firm to suit a wide range of government and industry web sites, intranets and databases.
Metadata is critical to enable web sites and intranets to be effective for user searching and also meet AGLS standards (now the required standard for both NSW State and Federal government web sites).
In a recent project for Telstra, we created metadata for over 40,000 intranet pages

Thesaurus construction
Our expertise in thesaurus construction can be used to make search facilities many times more effective.
A thesaurus will reduce user frustration in using search tools by allowing search terms to be matched to relevant documents, even where there is no exact match. For example, a user may type ‘standards’, which is not a term used on your site. But if your site has a thesaurus, the search tool can match this with ‘quality indicators’ and take the user to the correct location.
In a project for Telstra, we constructed a thesaurus which included human resources and technical areas. This project improved the performance of searches on their intranet site.

HTML coding
Our programmer is accurate and rapid. She has solid experience with HTML, JavaScript and other web technologies, including Cascading Style Sheets and accessibility standards for people with a disability.
HTML code should be clean and free of spurious tags and clutter so that it can be easily maintained and updated. Our professional web programmer is cost effective and will ensure the highest possible standard for your site.

Information architecture and consulting
Our expert in the field of information architecture can ensure that your web site is designed for success from the beginning. She carries out user needs analysis, prepares detailed site plans and interaction designs and organises user testing on the proposed site architecture.

Regard to information design principles, attention to structure, navigation and functionality are essential before coding and graphic design commence.
